Carnoustie foundry workers, early 20th century

editorial image

We have been looking to use this rather unique picture for some time and recently came across some information relating to it.

It shows the workers of Carnoustie foundry and was taken by James Jolly, photographer and tobacconist.

He had premises on the High Street and it is likely this picture was taken outside them near the beginning of World War One.

A bizarre range of hats is being worn by the men and we would be delighted if anyone was able to cast light on the reason.
