MACMILLAN Cancer Support Arbroath Committee met for its annual general meeting at a new venue, the town’s Commercial Inn.
Mr Bill Mathieson welcomed the committee and thanked them for their hard work. Mrs Flo Cruickshank announced that they had sent £15,425 to head office from fund-raising and donations throughout the year.
Ms Roz Martin, fund-raising manager from Dundee, took the chair for the appointment of office-bearers. They are as follows: chairperson, Mr Bill Mathieson; vice-chairperson, Mrs Jane Watt; secretary, Mrs Betty Edwards; treasurer, Mrs Flo Cruickshank; press secretary, Ms Jill Beattie.
The committee is keen to welcome new members. Anyone interested in getting involved should contact Jill Beattie on 07746 963048.
Ms Martin informed the meeting that she took up the post in October and noted that more money is spent than is raised in Angus/Tayside. The average grant provided is £350 for items such as washing machines, fuel costs and travel to hospital appointments.
She revealed that there are now welfare rights advisors, two in Forfar, two in Dundee and two in Perth, who, in the last year, have helped families claim £1.5 million worth of benefits they may not have otherwise known they were entitled to.
She explained that this is the centenary year of Macmillan Cancer Support and various fund-raisers are being organised on a local level.
The committee discussed their plans for the remainder of 2011. The first event on the fund-raising programme is a coffee morning at Abbey Church hall on Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. This will be followed by a family bingo night on Saturday, June 25, at the Scouting Centre to which all are welcome. For tickets or more information call 07746 963048.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 1, at 7 p.m. in the Commercial Inn.
