Angus Council is to establish a fund to replace and renew equipment in its public parks, with £400,000 being allocated to the project in the 2008/09 budget.
Amongst the projects set to benefit from the funding are replacement of play equipment at Victoria Park, Arbroath, and Brechin public park; repairs to walls at Lunan and Fowlis burial grounds; upgrade of paths and steps at Kirriemuir Den and reinstat
ement of the bowling green, tennis court and pavilion areas into George V Park, Ferryden.

The new parks and cemeteries renewal and repair fund replaces the dormant equipment renewal and repair fund which was not readily accessible to fund parks and cemeteries projects.

Convener of the strategic policy committee Bob Myles said: "This is a start to remedy the underspend in this area in the past and backs up the wish of the administration to put civic pride high on our agenda. We plan to set aside a reasonable amount each year of funding for upgrading parks and cemeteries as we are aware that around £2.7 million of works are needed to bring standards up to the required levels in our parks."

The parks and cemeteries renewal and repair fund report was approved by the council's strategic policy committee at their meeting on Tuesday.
