THE CONDITION of the roundabout on Barry Road, at the Upper Victoria Link road, has been debated with Angus Council by Ed Oswald, the town services sub-committee chairman of Carnoustie Community Council.
He is concerned about the condition of the planting, one year on from completion.
Mr Oswald told Angus Council: "As one of the three most important gateways into Carnoustie, it is important that this roundabout displays the best of landscaping and
planting in welcoming people into the town.
"Again I look to the roundabout outside the harbour area at Burnside Drive in Arbroath and see the different standards that are set by the council."
An officer from Angus Council roads department replied: "The planting on the roundabout in question is maintained by our colleagues in the parks department on our behalf. They have checked the roundabout and found it to be in reasonable condition. I understand that it is as it was for the Open Championship although with not as much growth at this time of the year.
"They advise that the planting is mainly 'Cotoneaster' which is a hard-wearing low ground cover plant, ideal for the location given the need to maintain sight lines and with the possibility of salt spray from the road nearby. It also requires low maintenance, particularly important in limiting the number of times that staff need to access the roundabout with the obvious health and safety risks. We are advised there is little weed growth and all is in good order.
"An alternative to the current planting and maintenance regime would be to hard surface the area."
