THE OFFICERS and boys of the 1st Carnoustie BB have been keenly awaiting the beginning of the hillwalking season.
Last year the Company applied for a grant from Awards for All to purchase enough equipment to take a group of 10 camping.

As a result, they were awarded £4,800 and purchased tents, stoves, all weather suits, gaiters, rucksacks, sleeping bags, slee
ping mats, compasses, maps, computer software for planning routes and two way radios.

The boys have been learning expedition and navigation skills throughout the year with a view to an overnight camping expedition in the Sidlaws.
And thanks to the Awards for All grant they managed to get away for the first time in many years and add a new dimension to the Company activities.

On Saturday a group of six boys and three officers set off from Coldstream and walked up Craigowl and then onto Balluderon and Balkello Hills before setting up camp for the night at the foot of Auchterhouse Hill.

In the morning they walked to the top of Auchterhouse Hill and then walked off the hill to their pick-up point in Auchterhouse on Sunday morning.

Bryan Knight, who is the officer in charge of the Company Section and expedition leader, said: "We have been waiting months for the BB expedition season to start and put all our new equipment to use. We have had a marvellous trip which the boys all enjoyed and I am looking forward to leading more of them.

"We have another group going away in a couple of weeks' time. There is no better way of getting boys used to teamwork and looking out for each other. Staying out on the hills overnight is a great adventure for them."
