The council-owned flats will be advertised for lease to the private sector or a housing association with a view to bringing them back into use as residential properties.
The lease opportunity was approved by the council's Corporate Services Commit
tee on Thursday.
The move was welcomed by committee vice-convener John Whyte, who said: "Leasing the flats to a private landlord or housing association would allow them to be brought back into residential use which would be good news for Carnoustie."
The flats were purchased by Angus Council in 1998; some years after the disused garage site had been converted into a car park by a predecessor council.
Committee members were advised that while the economic downturn may lessen private property developers' interest, the lease and refurbishment of the flats may be a more attractive proposition for housing associations as they could be eligible for government grant assistance under the Lead Tenancy Scheme.
