Last year's survey by members of Friends of the Earth Tayside, plus volunteers, revealed a ratio of 1.29 items of litter per metre of beach; this year showed less than half that as only 0.59 items were found!
Litter found such as plastic bottle
tops and polystyrene pieces are very harmful to wildlife and marine creatures as they are so easily ingested.

There are, also, too many dog walkers not clearing up their dog's mess.
Overall though, the situation is much better than last year mainly due to the combined efforts Angus Council staff and local volunteers who have been cleaning the beach regularly over the year.
The local Community Planning Partnership group has been instrumental in helping to galvanise the enthusiasm of local people for keeping their beach clean.
Monifieth's improvement mirrors that of the beaches at Lunan Bay and Auchmithie where litter has also been significantly reduced, thanks largely to community efforts
