A TEENAGER from Carnoustie was among drivers arrested for driving while under the influence of drink or drugs at the weekend.
The 17-year-old was one of 13 people detained while Tayside Police – in common with other Scottish Forces – was emphasising the importance of road safety on rural roads through a national three-day campaign.
The Country Roads Weekend campaign took place from Friday, August 22, to Sunday, August 24.
And the local constabulary is content to report there were no major incidents within the Tayside area.
However, there were still a total of 23 non-injury collisions and a further three collisions that resulted in minor injuries on country roads – all of which highlight that safety can never be taken for granted.
Whilst the main focus of this particular campaign was country roads, Tayside Police officers were also active in trying to detect drink/drug drivers.
Eleven men and two women were arrested during the weekend.
The 17-year-old male from Carnoustie was the youngest arrested during the three days of action. A 32-year-old man was arrested for drug driving following a collision in Perthshire.
Furthermore, a 40-year-old Dundee man was arrested twice for drink driving offences that were committed within the space of two days.
Chief Inspector Sandy Bowman, Head of Road Policing in Tayside, said: "Whilst I'm pleased there were no major collisions on our roads over the weekend, there were still a number of collisions that could potentially have had more serious consequences.
"It is of great concern that there are still people who choose to get behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of drink or drugs, but the fact that a significant number were arrested over the weekend demonstrates our determination to rid the roads of as many of these drivers as possible.
"Phone calls from the public were once again of great assistance to us and I would like to thank all those people who call the police to report drink or drug drivers. I encourage others to do the same."
