ONE EXAMPLE of the extraordinary efforts being made by Rotary clubs across Britain and the world to complete the eradication of polio is the achievement of two members of the Rotary Club of Monifieth and District, both of whom are retired.

Senior vice-president Phil Leckie and club secretary Ally Martin, with the backing of the club, raised £3,152 by completing a mini-triathlon - swimming one mile, running one mile and cycling one mile - all in a time of less than one hour.

To mar
k 'Thanks for Life - Rotary Day' on Tuesday this week, Phil and Ally presented a cheque to Rotary District Governor Bill Macfarlane-Smith.

The club is not resting there, however, as efforts to raise more money for this life-saving campaign continue. Members will be at Dobbies Garden World in Monifieth tomorrow (Saturday) when members of other clubs will also be collecting at Tesco supermarkets across the country.

Club president David Barrie commented: "Rotary has been involved for 25 years in the fight to eradicate polio and this is a tremendous push to complete the job in the last four countries where it remains endemic. We are proud of what Phil and Ally have done to provide such a huge boost for our club's contribution."
