MONIFIETH Community Centre Steering Group and the local community will have to find about £3.5 million if their dream to provide a community facility in the burgh is to become a reality.
The price tag was quoted at a well attended public meeting held in the Burgh Chambers on Thursday at which Angus Council was represented by Bill Strachan, from the neighbourhood services department.

Steering Group chairwoman Mrs Margaret Copland r
eported on a meeting held in December which was attended by Mr Strachan, Colin McMahon, representing corporate services, and the assistant manager of the finance department at Invertay House, Graham Ritchie.

She revealed that Mr McMahon had brought along a site plan and feasibility study for the site on offer, which is the staff car park at Invertay House, with access from Union Street.

It was agreed that this information was in order for the group to proceed with their plans and to move the project forward.

A proposed one-storey building within the suggested site could, if necessary, be expanded either on ground level or by the addition of another storey. However, building upwards would evoke further planning conditions regarding lift access and extra car parking facilities, the cost of which would be for consideration.

Thursday's meeting heard that a questionnaire has been prepared by the Steering Committee to permit people of the town to state their preference as to their needs for leisure and recreational accommodation. Several copies have already been circulated among some members of the community.

In a lively question and answer session a member of the public raised concerns about staff parking at the Invertay site if the project did go ahead.

However, Mr Strachan said that a new car park with 26 spaces would be provided under the plans.

Site maps were on display to show the location of the facility which was on offer.

Mrs Copland urged local people and organisations to make their thoughts known.

She stated: "The Monifieth Community Centre Steering Group is only 10 individuals from Monifieth which has a population of approximately 13,000.

"Let us hear from you what your input will be towards the building of a centre."
