THE ANNUAL Marine Conservation Society (MCS) national survey of beach cleanliness, which included Broughty Ferry, took place again on Saturday for the tenth year in succession.

Participants on Community Service Orders (CSOs) run by Dundee's Criminal Justice Services Department, local community councillors and volunteers undertook the survey and clean up which produced some interesting results this year!

The section of
beach from the Glass Pavilion to the Rock Gardens which is cleaned regularly throughout the year by the CSO teams, came out 10 times cleaner than the Balmossie section from the Rock Gardens going east to the Dighty Burn.

Access and boundary issues have so far prevented regular cleaning of that part and this issue will be addressed within the Broughty Beach Management Group. The goal is for the entire beach to reach the standard of the award beach west of the Castle which has almost no litter during the bathing season thanks to Dundee City Council's mechanical cleaning process and the CSO teams.

Previous surveys which show Broughty to be five times cleaner than the Scottish average have recorded litter found on the stretch of beach from the Castle to the Rock Gardens.

This year's provisional result has bettered even last year's. The 2008 MCS national survey will be published in the spring.

Anyone who wishes to report beach issues of concern can contact Doug McLaren, Broughty Ferry Community Council representative on 01382 774247 or via doug.mclaren@which.net
