FORBES of Kingennie have won the first special Disability Awareness and Accessibility award, announced at the Angus Best Bar None 2009 awards at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel on Wednesday.
The award was made in recognition of their provision of excellent facilities for individuals who have physical disabilities.

The overall winner and named Best Bar None 2009 was Sharkys Bar in Montrose.

The other finalists included the Vault Pub
in Monifieth, last year's winner, and named best pub once again.

At the ceremony, Chief Superintendent Alan Campbell, chairman of the Angus Focus on Alcohol Project, congratulated the licence holders who had achieved accreditation in this year's initiative.

He said: "Our overall winner for this year is Sharkys Bar in Montrose and I congratulate owner Carl Granville and his staff for achieving this coveted status and for making impressive efforts to meet the required standards."

The Chief Superintendent added: "It is most satisfying to be in a position to reward good working practices in local licensed premises. The Best Bar None initiative accredited a total of 31 premises this year and it is a real credit to all those who have taken up the challenge. I am delighted that the number of accredited premises in Angus has increased year on year since 2007.

"Best Bar None Angus supports the introduction of additional standards and policies for the trade. This scheme is entirely voluntary and ultimately provides safer, more comfortable pubs, bars and night clubs to visit, both for our local community and visitors to the Angus area.

He concluded: "We continue to tackle the problems associated with alcohol misuse. However, without the commitment shown by numerous partners and the licensed trade this would not be possible. I would like to encourage all licensed premises to consider joining the Best Bar None scheme for 2010-2011 and help promote a safer Angus for everyone."
