Abbey Theatre hosts The 39 Steps

The Abbey Theatre plays host to Forfar Dramatic Society this week when they bring John Buchan’s classic ‘The 39 Steps’ to the stage for one night only.

Based on Hitchcock’s 1935 adventure film, the play is performed with one actor playing the hero, Richard Hannay; and actress playing the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements, and two other actors playing every other character in the show: heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object.

This means that the film’s serious spy story is played mainly for laughs, and the script is full of allusions to (and puns on the titles of) other Alfred Hitchcock films, including Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo and North by Northwest. The performance is on Thursday at 7.30 p.m. Tickets, £7, available on the door on a first come, first served basis.
