The Arbroath-based Angus Darts Academy is set for a starring role on TV after its founder was nominated for a national award.

Darts player Alan Soutar, who has played in the BDO World Championships, is in the running for a RBS Finding Scotland’s Real Heroes award in the sporting volunteer of the year category.

The nominees are set to feature in a five-part series on STV in late September and later this month filming will take place at the Darts Academy, which is held weekly in the CAFE Project on Brothock Bridge.

Alan, who works as a firefighter, gives up his spare time to coach youngsters and has even seen two youngsters make it on to the Scottish International Darts team.

He was nominated for the award by Matthew Innes, who knows Alan through the Angus Darts Superleague.

He said: “I nominated him because he dedicates a lot of his spare time on evenings and weekends setting up leagues for the youths, running competitions and organising fund-raising for the Project.

“And judging by the number of responses from throughout the darts community, including many of the top BDO players from around Europe, it has been a popular nomination with players at all levels as well as the Arbroath community.”
