ARBROATH Instrumental Band and conductor Mike Robertson rounded off another successful year by coming a close second in the Scottish Challenge Shield, held at the Bonar Hall in Dundee.
There were 14 bands in the contest and entry was by invitation, with open judging by three adjudicators.
The Arbroath band played a rousing rendition of ‘Coventry Variations’ by Bramwell Tovey which gained an excellent critique from the judges and was only narrowly pipped at the post by Kirkintilloch Kelvin Brass.
Over the summer the band played at Magdalen Green Bandstand, Cupar Bandstand and the annual Sea Fest in Arbroath as well as holding their Gala Concert in the Webster Theatre at the beginning of September.
More recently they took part in the Remembrance Sunday Service for the Royal British Legion Scotland in Arbroath, played at the St Vigeans Church fund-raiser and supported Arbroath Male Voice Choir at their popular Christmas Concert.
The junior section of the band under the musical direction of Ann Ness, Arbroath Instrumental Youth Brass Band, also came a creditable second in the Scottish Youth Brass Band Championships (Development Section) at Perth Concert Hall in November.
This was their first year competing in this section so it was quite an achievement. Arbroath Instrumental Band is currently planning its engagements for 2012 and can be contacted via the website at www.arbroathinstrumentalband.co.uk or by calling the secretary, Alison Robertson, on 01241 411051.
The band annual general meeting will take place on Monday, February 13, at 7 p.m. in Carnoustie Panbride Church hall.
