A GROUP of Angus women are hoping to shed a few pounds for a good cause this month.

The group, which includes four women from Arbroath, have pledged to complete a sponsored slim for Brooke’s Dream.

They are Karen Stranock, Dawn Mackintosh, Christine Gunning and Kerry Ainsworth.

Last Monday some of the ladies joined a Scottish Slimmers diet class as the first step in their bid to help Brooke Ramsay walk.

Karen (40), a social care officer in the community, said: “I’m not really sure how much we will lose. We’re planning on losing possibly two to five stone by next year.”

Karen added that as a “wee incentive” the ladies will have to pay £1 for each lb if they gain any weight during the challenge.

Karen and Brooke’s mother, Laura, have been friends for many years, having first worked together in a nursing home as teenagers.

Brooke’s father, Stewart, said: “The girls are long-term friends. The support we are getting from them is unbelievable as they are all really busy people and to go and do these things is just fantastic.”

Karen said: “As soon as I heard, I knew right away that I would do a sponsored slim. Doing the slim for her has made me more determined to be good.”

In her first week Karen managed to lose 1.5 lbs, a healthy and sustainable weight loss. However, she is a bit disappointed.

She said: “I’ll lose a bigger amount next week, it would be good to have a wee boost right at the beginning.”

Brooke’s Dream has received a lot of support from Arbroath, her mother Laura’s hometown, and where a lot of her family still live.

On Tuesday Northern Tool and Gear, where Brooke’s grandfather Ray Cargill works, donated a cheque for £300.

Stewart said: “Arbroath has been absolutely fantastic with the response we’ve had. We have a lot of things running in the background that have still to be finalised.”
