Arbroath’s industrial base suffered a serious blow today (Friday) after it was announced that a long established engineering firm is to close.

John M. Henderson & Co. Ltd. is to shut its doors with the loss of 96 jobs.

It is understood that employees were called in and given the news this afternoon.

Hendersons was a major supplier to the oil, steel and mechanical handling industries globally and in recent years had become a world leader in coke oven machinery.

The engineering firm started life in Aberdeen in 1866 supplying the machinery and appliances of the granite, stone and allied industries.

Production moved to Arbroath’s Kirkton Industrial Estate in 1985 and in 1991 the rest of the operation also relocated to the site, which had in the meantime been expanded.
