A WEE grocery shop at 103 Gray Street, Broughty Ferry, that took on the big boys in a prestigious national competition finished joint runners-up in their category.
Clementine of Broughty Ferry was placed second equal in the ‘Best in Food’ category of The Telegraph’s Best Small Shops in Britain Award 2011.
Owners Jan McTaggart and Carole Sommerville travelled to London to attend the award ceremony presented by ‘Mary Queen of Shops’, Mary Portas, at a lavish event in fashionable new Mayfair restaurant, Novikov, last Wednesday night.
The pair met other finalists and had an opportunity to talk to Mary Portas about Broughty Ferry’s thriving retail sector in the light of her recent government report on the state of retail in Britain.
Jan told the Guide & Gazette: “We are delighted that our local shop has received this national recognition. It’s great that all our hard work has paid off, but most of all we’re so proud that our customers took the time to vote for us.
“Getting to talk to Mary Portas was a surprise. She seemed impressed by our description of Broughty Ferry’s thriving retail sector and said that our ‘Soup in a Bag’ concept was fabulous.”
