Over a thousand foodies flocked to the Ferry at the weekend for the town’s first culinary expo.

The brand new initiative, the Ferry Food Fayre, was held in the Best Western Woodlands Hotel on Sunday and was the brainchild of the food and hospitality members of the Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association.

The free event featured tastings, talks and demonstrations courtesy of some of Broughty’s own bakers, greengrocers, restaurateurs and publicans.

Highlights included Party Time’s balloon demonstration, The Cake Guru’s sugar flowers and edible lace demonstration, Iain Lilly, Dundee Bee Keeper talking about how our local honey is produced and The Cocktail Co.’s perfect cocktail with Scottish Mixologist of the Year Sian Fergusson. The Tayberry Restaurant’s Adam Newth cooked a three course dinner live and The Great Broughty Shake Off saw Dundee’s leading mixologists compete against each other.

The popular Broughty Ferry Minions welcomed visitors while youngsters were given the opportunity to feed organic hens.

Dundee Food Bank benefited from donations of foodstuffs and local good causes will benefit from a raffle which featured top notch prizes donated by members of the Traders’ Association.

Jan McTaggart was the main organiser who suggested a food event to the BFTA Committee last year. She said: “It’s been an incredible day. To be honest we were all quite staggered by the sheer numbers of people who came along to The Woodlands Hotel where the ballroom was pretty packed for the first couple of hours. The atmosphere was terrific and I know that several of the stall holders had to run out to replenish supplies. I’m really impressed by all the work that everybody put into the Food Fayre – I know that several people were working until midnight last night and from 5am on the day.

“The public got involved with their cakes in the Bake Off and we all got a wee taster of the cocktails from the Shake Off. All the feedback so far indicates that we’ll need to think bigger and even better if we’re going to do it again!”

The Great Broughty Bake Off Awards rounded off the day, turn to Page 7 for the results.
