MP and MSP visit leading producer

Angus parliamentarians were given a guided tour of the premises of one of Scotland’s leading malt producers last week.

Graeme Dey, MSP for Angus South, and Mike Weir, MP for Angus, met with Dr Richard Broadbent who is the production and technical director at Bairds Malt to learn about the processes involved at the plant at Arbroath’s Elliot Industrial Estate.

The impressive state-of-the-art facility was opened in 2010 and was the first of its kind to be built in Scotland for some 25 years.

Mr Dey commented: “It’s great to have business like Bairds Malt operating in Arbroath and supporting around 60 local jobs.

“I have been very impressed with the scale of the business which is directly linked into 230 Angus farms and contributes more than eight per cent of Scotland’s total whisky production. It is another Angus-based business which significantly contributes to Scotland’s celebrated food and drink industry.”

Mr Weir said: “Bairds Maltings is a highly successful company supporting employment through the farming, transport and other industries. It was interesting to hear future plans for the facility.”
