Local road maintenance is set to come under the microscpoe as Angus Council has set up a new scrutiny panel.

In response to issues raised by local communities about roads maintenance, and in particular potholes, it has been set up byy the council’s scrutiny and audit committee.

The panel, chaired by Councillor Bob Myles, will gather information at all levels from, make site visits and conduct interviews to gather a detailed overview of roads maintenance in the county.

The members of the panel, who will all be drawn from membership of the scrutiny and audit committee, will also consult with other authorities to identify areas of good practice and consider if these could be applied in Angus.

A similar panel, chaired by Councillor Brian Boyd has also been established with a remit to focus on waste management and the progress of the zero waste agenda.

Scrutiny and audit convener Councillor Bob Spink said: “This is a new approach for us and an exciting one we have been putting together over the last few months.

“Of course we expect we shall have some challenges along the way but we are prepared for that, and will adapt wherever we find it necessary.

“In preparation for the launch of this new approach the committee has taken some high level training and we intend to continue along this path.

“We have also had consultations with Aberdeenshire Council, who have a mature scrutiny review process, and seek to develop that link.

“I am hugely supportive of this new approach and look forward to facing the challenges, and seeing the benefits I am sure it will bring.”

Both panels will have officer support and will report back to the full scrutiny and audit committee.

Reports will then be prepared for each relevant service committee, and full council, with recommendations for improvement where necessary.

Councillor Spink added: “It is hoped this new review approach will bring benefit by identifying options for improvement.
