Carnoustie Gala Committee proved that no good deed goes unrewarded last week when they donated to more than 30 local groups as a thank you to the town.

The presentation evening was held in the Carnoustie branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, and the main beneficiaries this year were 1st Carnoustie Company of the Boys’ Brigade and Carnoustie Panmure SCIO, who each received a cheque for £500.

Two special awards were made at the Carnoustie Gala Day awards night. Mary Bushnell presented 500 each to Calum MacGillviray representing The 1st Carnoustie BB (left), and Phill Hope of Carnoustie Panmure SC10.

Chair of Carnoustie Gala Committee, Mary Bushnell, said: “We’ve always had the backing of the community and even supposing that Gala Day wasn’t brilliant, the weather was horrible in the morning but the sun did break through in the afternoon and everyone on the floats and at the fete enjoyed themselves. Everyone enjoyed their day, and at the end of the day that is what Gala Day is about. To be able to help local groups at the end of it all is brilliant. We’re really pleased at the backing we’ve had from businesses and the community.”

A delighted Phil Hope, chair of Carnoustie Panmure SCIO, added: “The Community Club was delighted to receive the donation of £500 towards the 3G Pitch Project and the evening allowed us to explain to those present that we now have 23 teams playing football from five to 65 years. The project will directly benefit over 500 players and will be a great community asset.”

Captain Neil Russell said: “On behalf of the boys and staff of the 1st Carnoustie Company Boys’ Brigade, we would like to thank the Carnoustie Gala Committee for their very kind donation of £500 which will go towards the cost of the boys of all sections attending the Climbing Academy and the Riverside Museum in Glasgow later in the year.”
