Concert celebrates musical heritage

AN ARBROATH expert in traditional song will be presenting a concert today (Friday) with the help of the pupils he has been teaching.

At 2.15 this afternoon in St Vigean’s Church hall there will be a concert by pupils from Inverbrothock Primary School.

The children have previously taken part in traditional Scottish music workshops led by Steve Byrne and this will be their opportunity to perform what they have learned.

Steve specialises in local traditional music and has been particularly interested in those of his hometown of Arbroath and the surrounding area.

Earlier this year Steve put on a series of three-week workshops for around 170 pupils from Inverkeilor, Colliston, Carmyllie and Inverbrothock primary schools.

Steve said: “I’m keen to emphasise to the children that everything has a story behind it, street names, landmarks, themselves and their families, and where you find stories you often find songs.”

Last April Steve led a series of workshops at Hayshead, Timmergreens and Warddykes primaries aimed at bringing traditional song back into general usage in Arbroath.

The project this year has been funded by Creative Scotland’s Traditional Arts Small Grants Fund administered by Enterprise Music Scotland.
