Suspect in court for Monifieth gran’s death

South African police have confirmed that a woman has appeared in court charged with the murder of a Monifieth grandmother.

Sandra Malcolm (74) was found dead in her Capetown home on Sunday, April 19, by her grandson.

This sparked a police investigation into her death which led to an 18-year-old woman being taken into custody last Wednesday (May 6) and appeared in court earlier this week on murder charges.

A spokesperson for the South African Police Service’s Western Media Centre said: “On Sunday 19 April 2015 the body of a 74 year old woman was discovered at her residence in Lea Road, Lakeside.

“After intensive investigation and information from Muizenberg SAPS Detectives, members of Citrusdal SAPS arrested an 18 year old female resident of Citrusdal on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at approximately 3.30 p.m.

“This office can confirm that an 18 year old female resident of Citrusdal appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 11, 2015 on charges of murder.

“The investigation is ongoing, which does not preclude the possibility of further suspects being arrested.”

Mrs Malcolm had lived in South Africa for 35 years and is survived by two daughters, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
