William and Christina Maguire celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with Angus Provost Helen Oswald and depute lord provost of Angus Dr Sandy McKendrick.

Mr William Maguire, 86 and Mrs Christina Maguire, 80, celebrated 60 years of marriage on their Diamond Wedding anniversary last Thursday.

Mrs Maguire met William when she was 15 and he was 20. They got to know each other when he came to work at Panlathy.

Taking a liking to one another they started to ‘go together’ as Mrs Maguire described it.

Mr and Mrs Maguire then married, tying the knot in the registry office in Carnoustie on October 9, 1954.

The couple moved to Netherkelly Farm on the outskirts of Arbroath, in 1955, where they set up home.

They lived at the farm, where Mr Maguire worked, for 38 and a half years and in 1994 the couple moved to Carnoustie to live with their son. Mr and Mrs Maguire have two children, Bill and Ian and two grandchildren, Deborah, 26, and Scott, 21.

“We had friends and family around to the house to celebrate on the day,” said Mrs Maguire. “It was a very nice way to celebrate the occasion.”

Angus Provost Helen Oswald and Depute Lord Provost of Angus Dr Sandy McKendrick also joined the couple to congratulate them.

Joined again by family and friends Mr and Mrs Maguire continued the anniversary celebrations with a meal in the Station Hotel on Saturday.
