Members of Monifieth Eco Force conducted a ‘Balsam Bashing’ event on the Dighty on Sunday. As can be seen from our picture, it was very much needed.
Our picture shows Eco Force volunteer Andrew Llanwarne getting to grips with Himalayan Balsam which is as tall as he is! Himalyan or Indian Balsam is an invasive plant which was introduced into British gardens by the Victorians.
Balsam has become a major nuisance on water courses like the Dighty as it grows vigorously spreading rapidly and outgrowing most of our native wildflowers, then when it dies back in winter leaves riverbanks exposed and open to erosion.
