THE FESTIVE Focus on Alcohol Angus campaign, organised by Tayside Police and partner agencies, will be launched at the ASDA supermarket in Forfar at 12.30 p.m. on Monday, December 3.
The county-wide campaign aims to encourage safe and sensible drinking over the festive period and is championed by the strong partnerships between Tayside Police, Tayside Fire and Rescue, Angus Council, NHS Tayside and the voluntary and private sector.
By working closely together, partners seek to increase the awareness of the campaign and share the message of sensible drinking throughout the communities of Angus.
Superintendent Kevin Lynch, chair of Focus on Alcohol Angus, advised: :Christmas is a time for families to enjoy themselves and that is what we aim to encourage. However, we would also encourage everyone to drink sensibly and ensure that you are not vulnerable or make someone else vulnerable as a result of excessive drinking.”
Focus on Alcohol Angus are delighted with the support from both ASDA and Tesco who have agreed for public displays to be present at their Angus stores. Representatives from the partner agencies involved in the campaign will be on hand to provide support, information and advice on sensible drinking practices to the public.
Throughout December, Focus on Alcohol Angus will use a range of methods to engage with and provide supporting information to young people, including Twitter and Facebook. Within local schools, a short project will be undertaken on alcohol awareness, aimed at 13 to 15-year-old girls who, through information from previous research, have been highlighted as a more vulnerable group.
Images with information about the Focus on Alcohol Angus website will be projected onto local buildings during Christmas light switch-on events in Arbroath, Montrose and Brechin, to further increase awareness of the campaign.
Robert Peat, Chair of the Alcohol and Drugs Partnership (ADP) in Angus, commented: “Christmas is a time of enjoyment and celebration and we want to encourage the people of Angus to have a happy and healthy Christmas. During the festive season most of us will enjoy a drink or two, the ADP has this simple message, have fun, be safe - ‘Make Christmas a time to REMEMBER! Drink Sensibly’.”
This message was also echoed by Susan Wilson, general manager of Angus Community Health Partnership, who said: “We want everyone to enjoy the festive season safely and we recognise that many people use alcohol as part of their Christmas celebrations. “We want to support people to look out for dangers and to keep themselves, their families and others safe so Christmas will be remembered for all the right reasons.”
The overall message is one of safety and encouraging people to consider their own drinking habits over the festive period, with a clear appeal to – ‘Make Christmas a time to REMEMBER – Drink Sensibly’.
Whatever your plans are over the festive period, Focus on Alcohol Angus would ask that you look after yourself, look after your friends and family, enjoy yourself and be safe.
