WITH Carnoustie Gala Week just two weeks away organisers are putting the finishing touches to this year’s programme of events.
Both Gala Week and Gala Day raise much needed funds for local causes within the town and since its revival in 1989, around £110,000 has been collected.
And when Gala Week begins on Saturday, June 30, organisers will be hoping more local causes will be able to benefit.
The Gala Week events organised for this year include a Songs of Praise event at the War Memorial on Sunday, July 1, and a pavement art competition on Monday, July 2 at the Leisure Centre.
Various sporting competitions will also take place as well as a Folk Night in the Aboukir on Wednesday, July 4.
These events lead up to Carnoustie Gala Day on Saturday, July 7, when the traditional parade leaves the Panmure Industrial Estate and makes its way to Carnoustie House Grounds.
And the theme for this year’s parade will be ‘Olympic Countries’.
From 2 p.m., the House Grounds will be home to various displays and events including performances from Carnoustie and District Community Pipe Band and Fiona Forbes School of Dance.
There will also be a pipe band competition, with the winners receiving a shield which will be presented in memory of local businessman and avid supporter of Carnoustie Gala Week, David Murray.
The Gala Committee has also recently donated a seat in memory of Mr Murray, which is located on the Carnoustie to Easthaven cycle path, just before the David Murray Transport depot.
And Mary Bushnell, chairperson of Carnoustie Gala Committee, is looking forward to this year’s event.
She said: “I would like to thank everyone on the Gala Committee who have worked hard throughout the year, and especially the hard work involved in organising Gala Week and Gala Day.
“A special thanks also to all the Friends of Gala who have assisted the committee throughout the year.
“Please come along and support the committee at some of the events as money raised goes back into the Carnoustie community.”
