Fishery talks

WELCOMING the outcome of the Fisheries talks in Brussels, Scottish Tory Euro MP Struan Stevenson criticised all-night sittings: “Keeping permitted days at sea at 2012 levels rather than cutting by up to a quarter is a major breakthrough.

“Plus, increasing quotas for Channel plaice by 26 per cent, sole six per cent, Celtic Sea whiting 29 per cent, Irish Sea herring 5 per cent, West of Scotland prawns 18 per cent and Irish Sea prawns six per cent is excellent, as is the restriction in cuts for haddock in the Celtic Sea to 15 per cent instead of 55 per cent and West of Scotland megrim to seven per cent (40 per cent).

“But marathon talks just before Christmas are an outdated and inefficient way of deciding the future for our fishing fleet.”
