On Friday evening, my partner Ryan and I dined out at Brechin Golf Club’s restaurant, Dining@Brechin Golf Club, which launched this year.

When we arrived at the club, the staff were very warm and friendly, and showed us to our window seat, with a spectacular view overlooking the 18th green.

After looking at the menu, two clear choices jumped out at me. To start, I had a garlic crostini with cheese, red peppers and jalapeños. I’d never tried it before, but it sounded right up my street.

Three lovely slices of garlic bread arrived with generous toppings, and it was every bit as good as it looked. It’s definitely a dish that has made its way on to my list of firm favourites. There was a decent helping of jalapeños, but they weren’t the dominating flavour and I quickly polished the lot off.

Ryan opted for the soup of the day, which was carrot and orange. The soup arrived with a lovely crusty slice of bread and both were happily devoured. The soup was well balanced in flavour, and not too thick in consistency.

For my main, I chose the chicken fajitas, which came with salsa and sour cream. One of the things I love about fajitas is that you are able to assemble it yourself, so the salsa to sour cream ratio can be personalised so easily. The chicken was lovely and moist, and was expertly spiced. The chicken was also served with red and yellow peppers which had been cooked perfectly, still with a bit of bite to them.

Ryan selected the steak pie, which was served with carrots, chips and green beans. I don’t think even a crumb survived, which speaks for itself when it comes to the quality of the food. The meat was succulent and the gravy from the pie was happily mopped up using the crisp, but fluffy chips.

We did debate a pudding but felt that it was a step too far on this occasion.

Needless to say, we will be going back, not just for the food, but for the wonderful service.

The club also runs themed nights, including a recent Italian-themed menu, and isdue to launch steak nights, starting from Friday, June 13, with two steaks for £24.

The restaurant is available for social members, which at just £10 a year, is a decent offer, given the cost and quality of the food (our meal cost £23). To enquire about a social membership, contact the club on 01356 622383.
