CARNOUSTIE Community Council’s campaign to improve rail footbridges has finally borne fruit.
Network Rail and Angus Council have informed the community council that work will commence later this month on two much-maligned footbridges over the main Edinburgh to Aberdeen railway line.
The essential improvement works will be carried out by Network Rail on the footbridge linking Tayside Street and Ireland Street, involving the repair of all metallic elements and replacing steelwork, panelling and non-slip surfaces.
Work will mainly be carried out overnight between 1 a.m. and 9 a.m., except Friday nights, and will last from February 18 to April 7. Repairs will also be carried out on the Park Avenue bridge.
Pedestrians will be prohibited from using the bridges during these times, but alternative routes exist.
Community councillor Ed Oswald said: “I am delighted that after many years of campaigning by the community council, these overbridges are to be repaired and refurbished. I appreciate there will be some disturbance over the nine weeks of night work, but the end result will be overbridges fit for the 21st century, appreciated by residents and visitors alike.”
