A Carnoustie man wowed onlookers on Tuesday night as he sank a 16” pizza in a speed-eating challenge at a High Street pizzeria.
About a dozen spectators gathered in Titanic Pizza Co. to witness the latest leg of the takeaway’s now annual month-long charity contest which saw Frankie Bell almost inhale the margherita pizza in three minutes 41 seconds.
Frankie, who happens to be a returning champion in the contest, was confident his preparations would pay off. He told the Gazette: “I knew it was going to happen, standard procedure, but I am going to go and work it off at the House of Pain.
“I’ve been fasting all day and this is about my ninth litre of water, I’ve been stretching my stomach, taking it seriously. It’s what I do.”
Titanic Pizza Co. proprietor Marie Fagan said: “The competition runs throughout May, except Sundays when we are closed, with the last day being Tuesday, May 31. Entry is £10, £5 of which goes to Guide Dogs for the Blind Scotland.
“Contestants may enter more than once, and I suspect Mark Stuart, who did it in an amazing 3:45 on Friday night, may return to better his score now Frankie has beaten him. Frankie was amazing and it’s hard to imagine someone could beat his time of 3:41 but there’s maybe someone out there who can!”
There is a cash prize of £50 to be won as well as a victory plaque which will go up on Titanic’s wall. There will also be champion’s T-shirts for both male and female winners.
Although we could not find a Guinness World Record for the fastest consumption of a 16” pizza, the record for eating a 12” pizza currently stands at 23.62 seconds and is held by Kelvin Medina from the Philippines.
