The Aboukir Grumpies will be holding a Family and Kids Fun Veggie/Plant ‘SunDay Competition’ at the Aboukir Hotel, Carnoustie on Sunday (September 29).
This will be a competition where people are requested to bring in for display garden-produce that they have grown in their gardens or plots. Pumpkins and marrows they have grown from plants or they bought during the June Aboukir plant sales will be given special consideration. There is no entry fee, and prizes will be awarded to the winners.
Families are also invited to view the Grumpy Garden which stands behind the The Gable Restaurant section of the Aboukir Hotel. ‘Grumpy Neil’ and other Grumpies will show you round, and hopefully encourage your children to develop an interest in gardening. There will also be a table of jam and chutney on sale during the afternoon, made by ‘Happy Lady Grumpy Gwynne’ from the Grumpy Garden plants. Any proceeds will be donated to a local charity.
The Aboukir Grumpies is an open group of both gentlemen and ladies who get together at the Aboukir Hotel every Monday for an hour at 5 p.m. to share their weekly grumps and decide what they can do to help enhance Carnoustie.
They also meet in the Grumpy Garden every Sunday to grow garden produce just for the pleasure of doing so as a group of friends. They hold garden sales every few months of produce grown in the Grumpy Garden, donating proceeds to local charities.
Hole In One
More than 1,200 golfers have so far received a limited-edition BOSS watch for scoring a hole-in-one during a club competition, but Gavin Bertie is one of the few to have achieved the feat on a par-four. Bertie, 68, from Monifieth, achieved his monster ace on the 312 yard, par four 10th hole at Monifieth Golf Club.
