A MONIFIETH garden designer who won a place at a prestigious London design school has set up his own business.

Inglis Thorburn worked for many years as a illustrator but always had an interest in gardening and after enrolling on an evening course, discovered he wanted to be a garden designer.

He then won a one-off bursary that helped him land a place at the Inchbald School of Design and now thanks to the help of Business Gateway, he has made his hobby a full-time job.

He said: “It was such an honour to win the Inchbald Bursary and study at the Inchbald School of Design.

“The design competition was run in conjunction with BBC Gardens Illustrated Magazine and the scholarship was a one-off award to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school.

“The prize was worth £5,000 and allowed me to study the Inchbald Diploma in the principles and practices of garden design which I passed with merit.

“As I progressed through the course I knew that’s what I wanted to do as a full-time career.”
