Get active this summer!

The Active Angus holiday programme will be even bigger and better this summer thanks to funding from Games for Scotland.

The fun packed programme of sports and activities runs from July 1 to August 9 at the council’s leisure facilities across Angus.

With just over a year to go before the Commonwealth Games, the Games for Scotland programme is inspired by the 17 sports of the Glasgow 2014 Games and dance, as well as the Commonwealth Games concept itself.

Speaking at the launch Angus Council leader Iain Gaul said: “As a host venue Angus is delighted that Barry Buddon is part of next year’s Games – with just over a year to go to Glasgow 2014, this summer of sport is a great way to celebrate the start of that countdown.

“Once again we’ve got a fantastic programme of sports and activities planned for the summer holidays. The variety of Active Angus activities on offer is sure to inspire children and young people - particularly the Commonwealth sports the international athletes will be taking part in next year. We’re grateful to Games for Scotland for the funding support which helps us to put on such a varied programme.”

It was announced this week that the Active Angus annual summer programme has been awarded £8,300 from the Games for Scotland programme.

The programme, which is managed by EventScotland, forms a key part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to deliver a lasting legacy as a result of the Commonwealth Games coming to Scotland.

Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport Shona Robison said: “The Games for Scotland programme encourages communities across Scotland to feel part of the excitement building around the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

“Thousands of people are able to join in this fantastic opportunity to celebrate our modern and vibrant culture, helping to deliver a legacy that Scots everywhere can feel proud of.”

Paul Bush, chief operating officer at EventScotland, added:  “We are delighted to be working with Angus Council in the delivery of what promises to be a fantastic event.  Active Angus epitomises what the Games for Scotland programme has been designed to accomplish; inspiring, motivating and engendering pride amongst the people of Scotland.

“With one year to go, the diverse programme of sport and dance events taking place across the country as part of the Games for Scotland project is undoubtedly extending the legacy of the Games far beyond the host city to the benefit of communities throughout Scotland.”

The Active Angus summer programme is packed with athletics, rugby and basketball camps, golf coaching, dance workshops, SFA football programmes and a host of other activities, including a full and varied sport and recreation programme for people with a disability.

The special ‘closing ceremony’ of this year’s programme on August 9 will see the  leisure centre’s holiday clubs transformed into a commonwealth games themed event; giving everyone the chance to try out some of the sports and to learn more about local sports clubs which run in their local area.

Almost all of the activities in the programme are included in the council’s b-Active membership scheme. For information about that and details of the full Active Angus programme go to or speak to one of the team at your local leisure centre or swimming pool.
