A group of Carnoustie friends have raised nearly £3,000 for charity thanks to their annual golf competition which took place last week.

A total of 32 golfers took to Arbroath golf course on Friday to play the annual Ross Cargill Memorial Golf Day which raises money for the Maggie’s Centre in Dundee.

The competition is always held on the Friday of the Open and is always a well attended event.

Organiser Blair Young said: “We raised £879 and we’re just away to get one more donation from a friend to round it up to £900.

“I just want to thank all those who took part and the people and local businesses who donated prizes for the competition and helped us to raise as much money as we did, it’s much appreciated.”

Last year the friends used some of the money they had raised through previous golf days to purchase a memorial bench in honour of Ross.

Blair said: “We’ve been saving up some money over the last few years and we purchased a new bench to go outside the Carnoustie Pro Shop.

“The remainder of the balance, £1,818 will be going in a cheque to Maggie’s Centre along with the this year’s donation of a further £900.”
