An Arbroath lady has been rewarded for her valuable contribution to the continuing fight against heart disease.

Helen Anderson has been named the Area Fundraising Volunteer of the Year Award from British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland.

Every volunteer is a real heart hero for BHF Scotland, but Helen scooped the accolade for the great dedication she has shown in helping the charity raise money to fund life-saving research into heart disease, including organising fundraising events, store can collections, and representing BHF Scotland at cheque presentations and speaking engagements.

She is also a member of Heart Voices, helping to make sure heart patients’ voices are heard, and is part of a cardiac review group.

Helen said: “Having a disastrous family history of heart disease, my husband Norman and I know only too well the worry and sadness it brings to many families. After I had a heart attack, I got support from the BHF heart helpline. That was when I discovered what an amazing organisation the charity is, and my involvement began. I was delighted to get more involved and show my appreciation for all their help. In 2013, we formed an enthusiastic local group here in Arbroath.

“I am delighted to have been given this award, but want to acknowledge and thank the rest of the Arbroath Fundraising Group for all their input, hard work, enthusiasm and dedication. There are so many other worthy volunteers who give their time to the BHF Scotland. We always need more volunteers to help out at our events and activities, so it would be great to see more local people getting involved.”

BHF Scotland volunteers like Helen play a vital role in the work of the charity.

The charity recently launched its ‘Wear it. Beat it.’ campaign which takes place during Heart Month in February, raising awareness of the devastating effects of heart attacks in Scotland.

Kathy McIlwaine, local fund-raising volunteer manager for BHF Scotland, said: “I am delighted that we can recognise Helen’s commitment to our work. She has said herself that she couldn’t do it without her amazing team but equally they value her leadership and enthusiasm.

“I would love other people in Arbroath to join our fight for every heartbeat in Scotland. Every pound raised, every minute of your time and every donation to our shops helps. There is no better time to find out how volunteering your time, just an hour or so, now and then, can make a massive difference to people’s lives, so please do get in touch today.”
