Angela Smith, mother of two and active member of the Arbroath community, has received shocking news from the Home Office urging her to leave the country immediately.

Born in Ohio, Ms Smith has lived in Arbroath since 2007 and has had an ongoing battle with the Home Office around gaining permanent residence.

“This is the third time they’ve tried to toss me out and I’m not putting up with it now,” she told us.

Following the filing of paperwork for permanent residence, Ms Smith’s work visa expired and she believes the Home Office have let time lapse on her application.

“Basically they have been sitting on my paperwork for nine months. They have made me illegal by not filing my paperwork in a timely fashion.

“When they found them they weren’t processed properly so they had to start over again and then yesterday I received the results of that second wait, which is basically a refusal.”

The reason for the refusal stated by the Home Office is Ms Smith not having a British family member. However, her daughter Ceilidh Smith, 13, is dependant on her mother.

“We have read the reason over and over and over again. It is invalid it doesn’t make sense.

“It says I don’t have a right to live here because I don’t have a family member here. My daughter Ceilidh is a British citizen and member of the EU. I am her sole support.”

The letter states that Ms Smith must make preparations to leave the UK immediately leaving her, Ceilidh and partner Matthew Tribble with few options.

Arbroath councillor Donald Morrison is helping the family but time is running out.

Ms Smith has been notified of her right to appeal but in the meantime cannot work or support her daughter or contribute to the household.

“They have made me dependant on Matthew and that’s not fair. I have to contribute, that’s just who I am. I don’t want to be dependant on anybody.”
