Blaze consumes Carnoustie shops

Waiting for Video...

CARNOUSTIE High Street was a hive of activity last week as firefighters tackled a major blaze.

The alarm was raised at 7.54 p.m. on Friday and emergency services descended on the row of commercial premises at 18 High Street.

According to a spokesperson for Tayside Fire and Rescue the fire was discovered by chance. She said: “The Carnoustie retained fire crew was on its way back from another incident when it spotted the fire.”

The Perfect Laundry and Dry Cleaning Service and the Carnoustie Country Larder greengrocer were completely destroyed during the incident.

The adjoining empty premises, formerly Granite City Fish Ltd., also suffered significant damage as the fire spread.

The adjacent flats were evacuated by the emergency services as a precaution. There has been no damage reported to the residences or injuries.

As the incident developed the immediate area of High Street, Lochty Street and Station Road were closed and traffic redirected, and at present part of High Street remains closed.

Around 30 firefighters from Carnoustie, Balmossie, Kingsway and MacAlpine Road attended the incident and were able to bring the fire under control.

The stop signal was given at 12.53 a.m. on Saturday morning and at 1.30 a.m. the Carnoustie crew retired.

An investigation into the fire began on Saturday morning and firefighters returned to check the site and damp down any hot spots.

At the moment it is unclear whether the fire started in the premises of the dry cleaner or the organic greengrocer.
