A rallying call has been issued for environmentally-conscious members of the community to take part in a clean up operation Barry Buddon this weekend.
The recent Beachwatch carried out there on behalf of the Marine Conservation Society found 1,600 items of rubbish, an average of eight items per square metre, four times the national average.
None of the rubbish which litters the five kilometre stretch of beach comes from the base itself and is all washed up or blown in from further afield.
Clean-up organiser Doug McLaren said: “This coming weekend when shooting is suspended and the red flags are down, we call for ‘all hands on deck’ to help tackle the situation! Monifieth EcoForce, Carnoustie’s beach cleaning group, the local Zero Waste Scotland group, and Friends of the Earth Tayside, with the backing of Angus Council are all leading the charge so please come along and give us a hand.
“In order to comply with military safety regulations on the base, volunteers are required to present themselves at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday to hear Harry Roy, the Camp Commandant’s briefing and issue of clean up equipment, so please don’t wander along at any other time!”
