American humanitarian Carl Wilkens was in town last week for the launch of Carnoustie High School teacher Jim Bell’s new book.
Mr Bell, principal teacher of religious and moral education, officially launched his book ‘Outside Solace’ at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel on Saturday.
Carl Wilkens was a humanitarian aid worker in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide and ignored advice to leave the stricken country in order help save as many lives as possible. He has since founded his own charity www.worldoutsidemyshoes.org and written a book ‘I am not leaving’ about his experiences.
Mr Bell’s book consists of writings from Scottish and American students and teachers about their experiences in Rwanda as part of an exchange programme.
The students from Carnoustie High and St Andrew’s Episcopal School, Jackson, Mississippi, were in the impoverished African state working with Level 8 Projects, a charity founded by Mr Bell in 2009.
It is filled with colour photographs and powerful, heartfelt stories about how well-managed funding from Level 8 Projects has affected conditions.
The book is on sale now for £10 and all profits will go towards Level 8 Projects. For more information visit www.level8projects.com
