A well-known Carnoustie couple both of whom undertake voluntary work celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on Thursday.
They received a visit from Lord Lieutenant of Angus Georgiana Osborne, who delivered a congratulatory card from Her Majesty The Queen, and Angus Provost Helen Oswald, who handed over a card from Angus Council.
Ena and Sydney Robb, Lomond Drive, were married in Barry Church by the Rev. George Gillon on September 5, 1953.
For the past 31 years Mrs Robb has run the Macmillan Cancer Support shop in Park Avenue and Mr Robb is a member of Carnoustie Gala Committee.
Mrs Robb was born near Brechin but moved to Barry when she was only six years old. She attended Barry Primary School before moving to Carnoustie School.
She left school at the age of 15 to take up a job in Weir’s Grocery shop and worked there for three years before gaining employment as a weaver at Grant’s Factory, where her mum already worked. She remained there until her wedding but later worked for several years as a cashier in the Regal Cinema, Dundee Street.
She was centre organiser for Carnoustie Red Cross for nine years before taking over the Macmillan shop.
Mr Robb was born in Carnoustie and was educated at Carnoustie School. After leaving school at 15 he joined the staff at Anderson Grice Engineers as an apprentice and qualified as an engineer draughtsman. He left in 1958 and went to the Babcock and Wilcox drawing office in Dundee.
In 1961 he joined the staff of D.C. Thomson Ltd. as an engineer and remained there for 37 years. When he retired in 1998 he was engineering manager.
He enjoys golf and is a member of Caledonia Golf Club.
Mr Robb is an elder of Newton Panbride Church. Mrs Robb is also a member, having moved from Barry Church.
The couple have three children, Olive, who is a neuro-radiologist consultant at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary; and twins Karen and Kevin. Karen is married to Charles Penrose and they live in Carnoustie and Kevin lives in Letham. There are three grandchildren.
A family party was held in the Carnoustie Golf Hotel on Saturday.
