Two big-hearted volunteers who support people with hearing loss in Carnoustie and Broughty Ferry have been honoured with a national award from the charity Action on Hearing Loss Scotland.

Alan Gordon and Helen Sharkey are part of the Tayside Hear to Help group which won the charity Volunteering Team of the Year award last week.

The team run 15 monthly drop-in sessions in communities across the region – including in Broughty Ferry Library on the second Monday of every month and in Carnoustie Library on the third Monday of every month.

In the last year, the team has maintained 3,000 NHS hearing aids for people across Tayside and spoke with thousands of people about managing hearing loss.

The volunteers also make home visits including to residents in sheltered housing and nursing homes to help them get the most out of their hearing aids and enjoy a better quality of life. This support saves hearing aid wearers a trip to the audiology department.

Alan said: “Volunteering to support people with hearing loss in Carnoustie and Broughty Ferry by sharing my own experiences of wearing a hearing aid is a great feeling and I’m delighted to be part of the Tayside team winning Action on Hearing Loss Scotland’s volunteering award.”

Helen added: “I get tremendous satisfaction from supporting people with hearing loss in Carnoustie and Broughty Ferry. It’s an amazing feeling to know that my volunteering is appreciated by people locally but also by the charity nationally.”

Michelle Donoghue, project co-ordinator for Tayside Hear to Help, said: “Our volunteers in Tayside are very hard working and dedicated so it is wonderful to have that their contributions recognised with this team award.

“We couldn’t deliver our Hear to Help service in Carnoustie and Broughty Ferry without the support of our inspirational volunteers like Alan and Helen. I am delighted for them as they make a huge difference to the lives of people living with hearing loss.”
