PEDAL POWER: Maggie Lawrie hopes new triathlon is a success

Arbroath woman Maggie Lawrie hope to get locals fighting fit after setting up a new triathlon event in
Montrose.

Maggie’s not-for-profit company, Tri Angus Limited, is organising the swim, cycle and run event which will see as many as 180 competitors descend on the local area on Sunday, June 1.

The triathlon is organised in a way that will offer something for everyone and allow both the experienced triathletes to test themselves on the sprint course as well as provide those new to the sport with an opportunity to get involved in the shorter distance.

Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK – and with the sporting legacy created by London 2012 excitement building for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Tri Angus team are hoping that more people than ever will be inspired to get outside this summer and challenge themselves.

Maggie, Executive Director of Tri Angus, said: “Montrose and the whole of the Angus area are fortunate to have stunning scenery and it’s the perfect training ground for those who are looking to get out on their bikes and also get their running shoes on.

“All the action will be taking place down at the
Montrose Sports Centre with the swim part of the event taking place in the pool there, so there is no daunting outdoor swim for those new to the sport. I started dabbling a bit in triathlon a year or so ago myself as a competitor but found there were very few events taking place near my local area, so this is when I first realised the opportunity for this event.

“We are aiming to fill all the places and ask all our local sporty types to help spread the word.”

Entries are open and more information can be found at www.triangus.co.uk.
