Reducing council’s carbon footprint
STATISTICS have revealed that Angus Council is the fifth best performing authority in Scotland in reducing its carbon footprint.
At a meeting of the council’s corporate services committee on Thursday members heard that the authority has implemented a number of measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
The council is a participant in the UK Government’s Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) which aims to encourage efficiency in electricity and gas use, and a reduction in carbon emissions, within qualifying organisations.
The CRC scheme league tables for 2010/11, the first year of the scheme, have now been published. They are based on actions that participants have taken to show they are committed to energy efficiency within their organisations.
The league tables also reveal that Angus stands in 17th place out of a total of 186 UK participating local authorities.
Committee convener councillor Mark Salmond commented: “These positive results reflect the ongoing work undertaken in carbon management within the council including actively reducing carbon dioxide emissions for non-housing properties, fleet vehicles, street lighting and business travel.
“The CRC scheme sets incredibly challenging carbon reduction targets for public sector organisations for future years, and to meet this challenge the council will continue to find new and innovative ways to reduce its carbon footprint.”
