Christie, from Auchterhouse, scored six to Achilleos’ 14, out of a possible 16 in what was a tense contest from the semi-final onwards.

For the Scotsman who missed out at the Delhi Games it was a fantastic result. He said: “It’s not sunk in yet. It’s out of this world and it’s a brilliant experience.

“I was fourth in Delhi and I just lost out on a medal. This is a brilliant, unbelievable result.”

This is not the first time the Cypriot has competed against Christie, but for victor Achilleos it all ended as it should have. He said: “I’ve known him for many years and I’m happy I won.”
