Mr Peat said: “I am very pleased to welcome representatives here from our licensed businesses throughout Angus, and I congratulate everyone who has worked so hard to achieve the high standards required for these awards.

“Initiatives such as the Angus Designated Drivers scheme and the alcohol awareness week campaign are all very important in encouraging the safe and sensible consumption of alcohol.

“The support of managers and staff in our bars and restaurants is crucial in promoting these messages.”

Chief Superintendent Kevin Lynch of Tayside Police, who is chairman of the Focus on Alcohol Angus board also praised those who had received awards.

He added: “I too congratulate all the participants and winners in providing a reassurance to the local community that they are committed to operating their respective premises responsibly and to a high standard.

“I am particularly encouraged by the participation of premises in Carnoustie which feature prominently in this year’s list of winners, and for the Westport Bar, Arbroath, which has only been operating for just over a year and which clearly impressed the mystery shopping judges.”
