FORTY years’ service with Marks & Spencer in Dundee by a Broughty Ferry lady was marked at a celebration in London recently.
Shona Anderson joined 393 colleagues from across the UK as they were rewarded for 40 or 25 years of service.
As well as enjoying a Champagne reception and a West End show with chief executive Marc Bolland, Shona received an M&S gift card as a thank-you for her commitment to the company.
She began her career with M&S Dundee straight from school at the age of 18 in 1972 and originally worked as a sales assistant, but soon moved into the administration team, where she now still works.
Shona was also married in 1972 and so is celebrating her ruby wedding anniversary as well as 40 years with M&S.
She said: “Working for M&S has been very rewarding. When I first accepted the job I never thought I’d be here for 40 years but M&S has been a great company to work for and I’m still enjoying every minute of it.
“I first accepted the job as a temporary, part-time Christmas role, so to still be here after so many years is quite an achievement. I remember my very first day at M&S was the December 20, 1972, so things were extremely busy in the run-up to Christmas. Back then we had to do everything manually, including filling up the photocopier with water and powder, so things were extra hectic!”
She went on: “My aunt worked for M&S for 38 years so she was thrilled to hear that I had reached my 40 year landmark and got to attend the long service celebrations. It has been lovely reminiscing with her.”
Steve Rowe, director of retail, commented: “At Marks & Spencer we are lucky to have so many employees who care deeply about the company and work continually to ensure that our customers receive first class service.
“The number of people celebrating long service this year is testament to the quality of employees and the opportunities they’ve been able to find here during their careers.
“These awards are our way of showing our appreciation for all the hard work employees put in and we are delighted to celebrate this special occasion with Shona.”
