Local woman Helen McGill has retired after working as an NHS nurse for nearly 44 years. Helen commenced training on May 1, 1972, and has since worked in many fields of nursing.
She has been a midwife, a neo-natal nurse, a staff nurse and a night sister at Ninewells, prior to having family. For the last 12 years of her nursing career she worked as a district nurse, attending patients in their own homes, latterly working in her own home Carnoustie area. Helen ‘thoroughly enjoyed’ this work and found it ‘extremely rewarding’. When forced to give up driving for two years, due to medical reasons, she was even known to get around her patients on a bicycle. In addition to working in research and drug development at Ninewells, Helen worked at the last two Opens in 1999 and 2007. Her retirement will be spent indulging her passion for bowling and enjoying short breaks with fiancé George.
