THE NEXT time you pop into Monifieth Library, why not have a look at the displays?
Staff like to keep them fresh and vibrant so that stock can be shown at its best! At the moment, you’ll find a selection of biographies in the suitcase display on the desk entitled ‘It’s My Life’. There is also a wall display of spoken word and large print books to support ‘Make a Noise in Libraries Fortnight’ which runs until June 24. You can find other colourful displays in the junior and teen areas of the library.
Junior customers will be well aware that it’s nearly the summer holidays! The Chatterbooks and Monifieth Memories groups will break up during the summer. They will both be back in September for a new session of fun and frolics. Until then, junior customers might like to take part in the annual Summer Reading Challenge!
There are two challenges this year. Bookbug’s Library Challenge is for children aged up to four years and Story Lab is for all primary school aged children. You’ll notice that this year’s challenges will have a sporting undercurrent to link in with the Olympic Games being held in London.
The challenge is simple: children are asked to read six books over the summer holidays – one per week. When a book is returned, the child receives a reward before choosing the next book. Bookbug children are treated to Bookbug song and rhyme sessions during the holidays and those completing the challenge are invited to a special Bookbug Award Ceremony where they will receive a prize.
Story Lab children will be able to take part in fun competitions and craft sessions, and those completing the challenge are invited to an awards ceremony where they will receive a certificate, medal and if you’re lucky enough to win a competition, a special prize.
If you’re interested in taking part, simply come into the library to register. If you’re not a member of the library already, it’s really easy to join and you can still take part in all the fun. Pre-registration starts on Monday (June 18) and the challenge itself starts on Friday, June 29.
Library staff hope that everyone has a relaxing summer - remember to come in and stock up on some paperbacks if you’re going on holiday!
